How do you get through times of physical inability to do asana practice? I have found it to be the key into my spiritual life and since suffering a shoulder injury find that I have to rest this aspect.
I know yoga is not just asana practice but how have you overcome the frustration of not being able to practice the physical form? Any kind words would be great……Namaste
Thanks sybil
And Phoenix, that was an incredibly wise answer…thank you….I will do that today…..
Thanks hot….the hard part for me is that my practice has been ashtanga so I’m used to a fast flow…. I guess I’ll be researching my options…..

Yeah, here’s some wisdom for you:
dump the crap and figure out where your
blessings, healings, and eternal life come from.
I often have times of forced physical inactivity and I also find meditation to be helpful…and stretch what you can…just let the injured area heal…there are times of rest in life…
I do not practice yoga regularly, but I have a technique I use when I’m having trouble being physical. I have a conversation with my body. We lay down, get comfortable, and have a long talk about what’s going on. Sometimes I even speak both sides of the conversation out loud. We go through the pains and difficulties, talk about possible solutions, and come to an understanding. Sometimes I can even convince a painful spot to let go of the pain.
If you are in touch with your body, it should be quite easy to have a conversation with it and address the weak spots and find a sort of physical peace like what you would get from yoga.
The practice of yoga is more into conscious awareness of your form rather than being good at it. You don’t have to force yourself into something that you cannot. Do only according to what your body tells you as your own body is your guide.
As with the shoulder, if it really hurts, there are lots of asanas that do not involve traumatizing the shoulders. Try those that you’re comfortable of doing without hurting your shoulders.
Yoga had been invented by Patanjali before 5000 years. Modern man has passed through many changes in mind set up and also way of life has changed for him.
How far the Ancient Astanga Yoga will be useful to one who want to live in modern world and achieve spirituality, liberation ,
You need to look at the whole concept of Yoga from new perspective..
and way to do this is to see whether your stress is relieved with this yoga,
whether your breathing is deepened with this yoga,
whether you mantain calm with this yoga
whether you feel energy high with this yoga.
You then need to find other ways to be in turne with yourself in terms of physical as well as mental health..
I would suggest to just stand back and take the very broadest view for a while . . . that yoga is study and as a yogini you’re a student and the purpose is liberation from suffering, whether you’re practicing the physical yogic disciplines or the mental ones. sitting quiet meditation with the same yogic intention can be equally powerful and so keep in mind the ends rather than the means.
I’m just a newbie in yoga, but I can’t help but quote our teacher’s words when she ends each practice: “The first yama is nonviolence.” She is quick to point out that this includes our own bodies. It is a hard lesson, because I start to go crazy if I can’t move in the way I want; I have been stupid about injuries in my life and have had to learn in hard ways NOT to push them. Adapt your physical practices to accommodate the injury. I have had to switch my aerobic activity from walking/running to swimming in my latter years because of very bad knees and ankles. I learned the hard way by continually spraining my ankle until I had to find a better solution. Deflect the frustration into another, less injury-straining activity until your shoulder heals.
