<p>There are so many different styles and kinds of yoga I&#8217;m not sure you could even list them all. Even within the same style each teacher teaches differently enough that you could say each teacher really does have a style of their own.</p>
<p><span id="more-162"></span></p>
<p>There is a big difference between traditional and modern yoga though. This is my take on it:</p>
<p>Traditional Yoga</p>
<p>Traditional yoga classes are typically 90 minutes. They are held in a studio which generally does an amazing job of creating a restful atmosphere. You need to arrive 10 minutes early at least and I always feel it appropriate to whisper for some reason. Traditional yoga often can include chanting and more advanced breathing practices so be sure to read the class description if you aren&#8217;t comfortable with that. The studio&#8217;s are also very good at cleaning the mats and other props. Just be sure to be careful and listen to your body. Look into the teachers teaching credentials as there is no standard as to what level of training private studio&#8217;s need. </p>
<p>Modern/Fitness Yoga</p>
<p>Modern/Fitness yoga classes are typically 60 minutes. Depending on the teacher they can try to set the mood but very often these facilities do not have dimmers and sometimes it&#8217;s not even a fully enclosed room. Very often participants are running in right as class starts. These classes can be drop-in, sessions or part of a gym membership. These facilities very often don&#8217;t have props or even an yoga mats so call ahead to find out. I suggest bringing your own to a fitness yoga class. Modern/Fitness yoga is more aware of current fitness principals such as alignment. To teach in a fitness facility you only need to have the BCRPA (British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association) Yoga leader designation or equivalent in your province or state.</p>
<p>I suggest trying a variety of facilities, styles and teachers before settling on one you want to invest your time and money into. Even after you find that magic place and teacher be sure to visit other classes.</p>
<p>The benefit are amazing!</p>

By understanding that yoga is not just physical positions but also a full lifestyle you&#8217;ll come to appreciate its complete health benefits.</p>
<p><span id="more-152"></span></p>
<p>&#13;<br />
No one really knows who first developed yoga except for the fact that it seemed to have originated somewhere in the Indus Valley regions of Northern India.  References to yoga first appeared in both archaeological and written references about 3000 to 5000 years ago.  The first compilation of yoga practices seems to have appeared about 2200 years ago with the publication of a book called the &#8216;Yoga Sutras&#8217; by Patanjali.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
The Yoga Sutras are a compilation of 196 principles about the practice and philosophy of yoga that are meant to be memorized and incorporated into one&#8217;s lifestyle.  These principles have become to be known as the foundation of Raja Yoga &#8211; sometimes referred to as Royal Yoga with a primary focus on the mind by taming the body and enhancing the spirit.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
The Raja Yoga discipline as described in the sutras is divided into eight steps &#8211; otherwise known as the eight &#8216;limbs&#8217;.  Each step focuses on aspects around lifestyle, purity, body, breathing and meditation.  Here is a high level description of each:</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
1. Yama &#8211; abstentions for living virtuously such as truth, non-violence and continence<br />&#13;<br />
2. Niyama &#8211; observances and disciplines for mind and body<br />&#13;<br />
3. Asana &#8211; bodily postures for meditation<br />&#13;<br />
4. Pranayama &#8211; regulated breath and control of the life force<br />&#13;<br />
5. Pratyahara &#8211; sensory withdrawal of the mind from the physical world<br />&#13;<br />
6. Dharana &#8211; meditative concentration on an object &#8211; knowing you are meditating<br />&#13;<br />
7. Dhyana &#8211; meditation with no consciousness of the act of meditation<br />&#13;<br />
8. Samadhi &#8211; enlightenment</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
As you probably noticed modern yoga as it is typically practiced today is heavily influenced by steps three and four &#8211; Asana and Pranayama.  Most modern yoga fitness programs are related to the practices of Hatha Yoga which is a system of physical purification to assist the meditative effects of steps five through nine.  This system is comprised of a large number of bodily postures designed to develop balance, poise and strength.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
The mainstream instruction of yoga includes many body positions and breathing exercises that have been found to be extremely beneficial to personal well being, fitness and health.  Practiced over time yoga can become a path to improving anyone&#8217;s lifestyle.  By combining this practice with the additional Raja &#8216;limbs&#8217; yoga can lead you an enlightened life change.</p>

Anyone who has been taking yoga classes for any amount of time will probably tell you they feel much more fit then they did before taking yoga classes. This is because of the holistic ideals behind yoga and how the holistic side of yoga actually creates a fit body from head to toe.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
 &#8211; Yoga Fitness:</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Fitness yoga is the discipline of strength training through core exercises. This can range from focusing on very specific parts of the body or focusing on a more holistic approach that includes the entire mind and body. Either way will get you fit, and it is probably good to have a combination of the two if you are serious about using yoga postures to keep fit.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
 &#8211; Power Yoga:</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Power yoga definitely belongs in the fit category of yoga practice. Power yoga is a form of yoga that uses the yoga body postures, but in an accelerated succession of these postures. This will allow the body to strengthen very quickly, and stay very fit, but as you might have guessed, this type of yoga takes time and practice to master. This is because there are many yoga positions that must be mastered so you can do the yoga poses in a smooth succession.</p>

 &#8211; Staying Fit with Breathing:</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
One of the key features of yoga, whether it is yoga for meditation, strength or fitness or all three, is that yoga is about breathing. That is to say you need to breath properly while completing the different yoga poses. This is an added benefit to staying fit with yoga, because yoga will actually help you to breath more properly while doing other exercises as well, and will remind you to breath properly throughout the entire day, promoting fitness.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
 &#8211; Some of the Different Types of Yoga Fitness Include:</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
 &#8211; Ashtanga Yoga is a type of yoga that means eight limbs. It is a quick paced yoga style, and is one of the more intense types of yoga. It is based on a progressive set of sequences of asanas which are synchronized with proper breathing. This is one of the more physically demanding types of yoga available.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
 &#8211; Power Yoga is seen as a western interpretation of yoga and is based on Ashtanga yoga. It also involves a series of poses in succession of each other.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
 &#8211; Vinyasa Yoga, which means breath synchronized movement is another intense type of yoga that is fast paced with an emphasis on breathing techniques. This type of yoga may begin with sun salutations and then might move to intense stretching exercises.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
 &#8211; Bikram Yoga is also known as hot yoga and is practiced in 105 degree heated rooms. Typically, this yoga session includes 26 different poses and is often practiced with a Bikram Yoga class. The hot temperatures will loosen muscles and there would obviously be profuse sweating as well. Some of the appeal to this type of yoga is the idea that it also cleanses the body due to the intense perspiration in the 105 degree temperature room.</p>

There are a lot of different types of yoga out there, and for fitness, there is no shortage of yoga styles that will suite your needs. We recommend trying them all out, and then deciding which one is best for you. Remember that yoga will provide an overall fitness that is hard to match with other types of fitness exercises.</p>
